Butyl Rubber (IIR)

Chemical Structure

• Copolymer of isobutylene with small amounts of isoprene or butadiene.

Service Temperature

• -40°F to +120°F

Advantages

1. Excellent airtightness
2. High resistance to ozone, aging, and heat (long-term operating temperature below 130°C)
3. Resistance to inorganic strong acids and common organic solvents
4. Good vibration absorption and damping properties
5. High electrical insulation

Disadvantages

1. Poor elasticity
2. Poor processability and slow vulcanization rate
3. Low adhesiveness and oil resistance

Applications

• Inner tubes, water tubes, balloons
• Insulation layers for wires and cables
• Linings for chemical equipment, shock-absorbing products
• Heat-resistant conveyor belts and aging-resistant rubberized fabrics
